Ground-based Radio-Array Observatory for Space Situational Awareness & Radio Astronomy

Overview

The Ground-based Radio-Array Observatory for Space Situational Awareness & Radio Astronomy will be established and operated through the UAEU Radio Astronomy Pathway Project (URAPP) in collaboration with Curtin University/ International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research/ Murchison Widefield Array Consortium. It will be taken forward as a mainstream, multi-phase large-scale scientific initiative, which will provide enormous potential to enable and facilitate multi-disciplinary, international radio astronomy and space science research, technology transfer, and skill development.

Research Objectives

Research Objectives

  • Deploy and commission a first-of-its-kind 256-element, ground-based radio-array observatory in the UAE from the platform of NSSTC-UAEU.
  • Operate the observatory for Space Situational Awareness (SSA) activities involving space surveillance, tracking and monitoring of Resident Space Objects (RSOs) for UAE’s space traffic management (STM) needs and to contribute to the global RSO catalogue.
  • Use this facility as UAE’s premium radio observatory for all-sky measurements, observations and monitoring of Astronomical objects and events in the radio band.
  • Conduct main-stream, high-impact research in space-related areas with this observatory as a standalone facility as well as a part of a global network of observatories to take part in international experiments.
  • By carrying forward the aforementioned activities, ensure skill development, education, knowledge transfer and capacity building.
